Neurodiversity-Affirming Therapy
What is Neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence is a natural variation in how the brain processes information, emotions, and experiences. It includes ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other ways of thinking that may not align with societal expectations.
You might be neurodivergent if…
-
You’ve always felt a little different but never knew why.
-
Identify as autistic and/or ADHD.
-
Often feel invalidated or that others don’t accommodate your unique way of thinking and being.
-
Mask your identity, needs, and struggles for fear of judgment and rejection.
-
Expressing yourself can feel overwhelming—even when you’re trying your best.
-
Relationships take a tremendous amount of effort and often leave you exhausted.
-
It feels like people are always mad at you, even when you don’t know what you did wrong.
-
Reading emotions, body language, or facial expressions is difficult for you.
-
No matter how hard you try, you feel like you mess things up.
-
The thought of starting a project feels overwhelming, so you avoid it altogether.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. At Blue Oak Counseling, we specialize in working with neurodivergent adults —helping you understand yourself, navigate challenges, and build a life that works with your brain, not against it.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I know if I have ADHD or if I’m just “lazy” or “unmotivated”?
You are not lazy. ADHD affects motivation, task initiation, and executive functioning, making everyday tasks feel overwhelming. Therapy can help you understand these patterns, develop coping strategies, and challenge negative self-talk.
2. I keep forgetting appointments and losing track of time. Will you be frustrated with me?
Absolutely not. We understand how ADHD affects time perception and organization. We’ll work with you to set up flexible systems that accommodate your brain’s needs rather than punish you for them.
3. Can therapy actually help with ADHD, or do I just need medication?
Therapy and medication work best together, but therapy alone can still be powerful. We focus on emotional regulation, self-acceptance,
executive functioning skills, and unlearning harmful societal messages about productivity and worth.
4. I mask a lot—what if I don’t even know the “real me”?
That’s completely understandable. Many neurodivergent people spend years trying to fit into a world that wasn’t designed for them. Therapy is a space where you can safely explore who you are beyond the mask—without fear of judgment.
5. What if I can’t stay on topic during sessions?
That’s okay! Our therapists are used to nonlinear conversations. We’ll meet you where you are, whether that means following tangents, using visual tools, or structuring sessions in a way that keeps you engaged.
6. Do you provide ABA therapy?
No, we do not provide ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) therapy, and we are not certified behavior therapists. Instead, we focus on helping individuals develop strategies that make life more manageable, fostering self-acceptance, and improving overall well-being.
Our therapy sessions are tailored to help you understand and appreciate the workings of your neurodivergent mind, supporting you in more effectively navigating both personal and professional environments and relationships. Give us a call today (909) 366-4712
